Hindi films · India domestic box office · 1940 – 2026
Normalised Bollywood Earnings
Hindi film box office in rupees, normalised for ticket-price inflation. Each film's domestic nett collection is converted to the number of tickets it sold, using the average Hindi ticket price of its release year, and those tickets are re-priced at the 2025 ticket. The result is what each film would have earned at today's prices, so releases from different decades can be compared directly.

Ticket prices, inflation and income
Indexed to 1994 = 100 on a log scale. The right-hand axis reads the ticket-price line in rupees. Ticket prices rose roughly three times faster than consumer prices after 2000, which is why a CPI adjustment alone still favours recent films. Dashed segments are interpolated between documented anchors. Hover a year for values, including the ticket as a share of one day's average income.

Options that we can normalise
- Tax basis. All figures are domestic India nett, after entertainment tax or GST. Gross is not used: before 2017 it could be twice nett in some states.
- Ticket price. Footfalls = nett ÷ average Hindi nett ticket price of the release year. Normalised box office = footfalls × 2025 ticket price. The two rank identically.
- Population. Footfalls per 1,000 people in the release year.
- Industry size. Nett ÷ median nett of the other films in that year's top 10. Blank where a year has fewer than five tracked films.
- CPI. Nett × CPI(2025) ÷ CPI(year). Shown for comparison; it understates pre-2005 films because ticket prices outran inflation.
- Re-releases. Excluded where the source separates them.
- Confidence. Tier A: footfalls published by a trade source (±10%). Tier B: derived from tracked nett, 1994 onward (±15%). Tier C: derived from reconstructed pre-1994 nett (±25% from 1975, ±40% earlier).
Ticket price series
- 1994 – 2017
- Box Office India yearly average ticket price (Hindi, nett).
- 2018 – 2020
- Total nett ÷ total footfalls across the films Box Office India reports both for.
- 2022, 2023, 2025
- Ormax Hindi average ticket price, gross ÷ 1.18 for GST. 2021 and 2024 interpolated; 2026 carries 2025 forward.
- 1940 – 1993
- Log-linear interpolation between documented anchors: 1940s (¼ rupee), 1957, 1960, 1975 and the 1994 value.
Reference price for normalised box office: , the 2025 Hindi nett average. Income per person is World Bank GDP per capita in current rupees, 1960–2025, extrapolated to 2026.
Limitations
- India has no official admissions tracking; all footfalls are trade estimates.
- Pre-1994 nett figures are retrospective reconstructions from historical Box Office India tables.
- The 1957, 1960 and 1975 price anchors are set from the consensus footfalls of Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam and Sholay, so those three positions follow from the anchors rather than from independent data.
- Published 1980s footfall claims (Coolie, Maine Pyar Kiya) imply a flat ₹2 ticket for the decade, inconsistent with the ₹11 recorded for 1994. They appear only in the consensus column.
- Box Office India's structured data ends in mid-2024; 2024–26 footfalls come from its articles and from Bollywood Hungama.
- Not adjusted for: screen count and seat capacity, piracy, streaming windows, release competition.
